Intra-Abdominal Pressure Retraining
with a Diaphragmatic Breath
Like a soda can, your torso has a top (vocal cords), bottom (pelvic floor), and cannister (abdominal wall & multifidi muscles). In the middle is your diaphragm muscle. Together they work to regulate your intra-thoracic pressure and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). Pressures are changed by movement, breathing, and postures that ultimately shift our organs (and more) against the structures that enclose them.
When the soda can is open or deformed, the pressure is not able to sufficiently stabilize and it becomes easier to change the can’s shape. Similarly if the IAP of our body is not regulated by the abdominal muscles, stabilizing spinal muscles, stacked diaphragm, and pelvic floor then the structure of the trunk is open to dysfunction,
Our diaphragmatic breath holds the power to retrain our body to reap the benefits of well managed intra-abdominal pressure.
